Storm winds blow from the first to the last bars of The Flying Dutchman, unsettling the sea and the characters' hearts. In this 1843 opera Wagner tackled for the first time a theme that would always haunt him: redemption through love. The libretto, inspired by a Norse legend and written by the composer himself, tells the story of a Dutch captain condemned to sail for eternity on his ghostly vessel until the faithful love of a woman breaks his curse. Senta, a pure-hearted maiden, will be the only one able to save the Dutchman by sacrificing her own life.
Der fliegende Holländer is considered by many to be a transitional work, in which Wagner experiments with the use of Leitmotifs (recurring musical themes associated with characters and situations) while still retaining traditional elements, such as the folk-inspired sailors' and spinners' choruses and Italian-style arias. To keep the various components of this swirling opera in balance, conductor Nathalie Stutzmann, whose name is making a name for itself in Wagnerian circles, as evidenced by her participation in the Bayreuth Festival, will take the podium. A cast of international caliber will perform in the staging designed by Willy Decker, whose dreamlike charm elicited enthusiastic applause at the opening of the Regio's 2012/2013 Season.
